“We didn’t finish where we wanted, but this was a huge learning experience for our entire team,” said Joe Martinez. “The level of competition at WIFC continues to push the boundaries of our sport. We’ll take what we learned here in Sweden and come back stronger next year.”

 

In a moment that marked the end of an era for Team USA, Captain Myron Gilbert officially announced his retirement from competitive international ice fishing during the championship. A true legend of the sport, Gilbert’s impact spans decades as both an elite competitor and a longtime captain and coach of Team USA.

 

Widely respected across the international ice fishing community, Gilbert helped shape the modern era of U.S. competitive ice fishing. His leadership, knowledge, and passion for the sport elevated not only his teammates but also the program as a whole.

 

“Captain Myron Gilbert is one of the most influential figures our sport has ever seen,” Martinez added. “His legacy goes far beyond results—he built a culture, mentored generations of anglers, and helped put Team USA on the world stage. He will be greatly missed in this role.”

 

The championship also reinforced the global camaraderie that defines the sport, bringing together anglers from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for ice fishing.
