Scouting America has announced that Michael Brand, Vice President of USAngling, has been awarded the BSA Distinguished Conservationist Award, one of Scouting America’s highest honors recognizing outstanding leadership and lifelong dedication to conservation and environmental stewardship.

The award, approved by the  National Conservation Awards Committee, celebrates individuals whose efforts in conservation and environmental education have made a significant impact on their communities and the natural world. Since 1915, Scouting America has recognized Scouts and Scouters who exemplify conservation leadership and inspire future generations to protect our planet’s resources.

“Michael Brand’s lifelong commitment to conservation, education, and community engagement reflects the very essence of this award,” said Brian R. Gray, Outdoor Program Coordinator for Scouting America’s Outdoor Programs and Properties Team. “His leadership demonstrates an enduring respect for the environment and a deep understanding of how to inspire others to make a lasting impact.”

Tony Forte, President of USAngling, also praised Brand’s dedication:

“Michael has demonstrated an enduring commitment to conservation through years of service with USAngling, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides for USA fishing teams as they compete worldwide. He has been with the organization since 2018. Michael’s financial stewardship and strategic vision have ensured that our resources are used effectively to advance our mission of protecting natural habitats and promoting responsible outdoor recreation.

As Youth Committee Chairperson, Michael actively supports community initiatives, educational programs, and hands-on conservation projects that foster a deeper respect for the environment. He works closely with local Chambers of Commerce and community leaders to ensure that events are inclusive, safe, and welcoming.

He has provided opportunities for youth in local communities to meet professional anglers, learn about the sport of angling, and understand the importance of conservation and stewardship. As an executive committee member, treasurer, vice president, and risk management chair, Michael has championed safety and enjoyment for all participants. Through his dedication, he has strengthened USAngling’s impact and inspired others to value and protect our natural resources.”

Brand’s work with USAngling aligns closely with Scouting America’s conservation mission—fostering stewardship, youth education, and sustainable outdoor practices. Through USAngling’s national programs, Brand has championed initiatives that connect young people to nature, promote responsible angling, and emphasize the shared responsibility of preserving waterways and ecosystems for future generations.

“This recognition is truly humbling,” said Brand. “It represents not just my personal journey, but the collective effort of everyone who believes in protecting our natural world. Conservation isn’t a solo pursuit—it’s a legacy we build together for those who will follow.”

Award materials have been sent to the Greater St. Louis Area Council, where a formal presentation will be scheduled.
