Maui hosted the 2nd regional qualifier for USAngling’s Saltwater Kayak Fishing Teams National Championship in October 2024 at Makena Landing, Kihei. Organized by Regional Tournament Director Tai Over, this beloved event brought together Maui’s best anglers, out-of-state competitors, and participants from neighboring islands for a thrilling two-day competition.

Tai Over’s dedication to the sport and his community has made the Makena Landing Kayak Fishing Tournament a standout event year after year. USAngling recognized his hard work by sanctioning the tournament as a regional qualifier for the 2025 National Championship, to be held in August in Pompano Beach, Florida, with Joe Hector of Extreme Kayak Fishing. The top 10 anglers from the Maui event secured direct invitations to the National Championship.

The competition delivered incredible moments and catches. Wesley Calvan took first place with an impressive 39-pound Wahoo, earning $3,247. He shared, “Tournament day was a sight to see! I fish at Makena more than anywhere else on the island, but never with that kind of crowd. Competition was high, but surprisingly, everyone was respectful and no lines were crossed. Nothing but a good time out there! Fishing alongside Hawaii’s best was an honor and I’m glad I was a part of it.”” Second place went to Lyle Fujimori with a 35-pound Wahoo, while Oahu’s Marshall Montez Jr. secured third with a 33-pound Yellowfin Tuna. The tournament also featured inshore, offshore, and Keiki divisions, ensuring something for every angler, alongside raffles and prizes that left attendees feeling like winners.

The event ended with a Hawaiian feast, live music, fire dancing, and an electric light parade, celebrating the spirit of community and fishing.
